Since the U.S. Surgeon General’s big announcement about social media and technology, I have been receiving lots of emails from individuals asking how they can digitally declutter their lives. There is no better individual to go to for the research and how-to on the best way to digitally declutter than Cal Newport. A former professor at MIT who now teaches at Georgetown University. His book, “Choosing a Focused Life in a Noisy World” is one of my favorites as he does a fantastic job at specifically providing tools to get control of your digital life.
Cal Newport's three-step digital declutter plan is designed to help individuals regain control over their digital lives and create a healthier relationship with technology. The plan consists of three key steps: the first is to take a break from optional digital technologies for a defined period of time. This break allows individuals to reflect on their digital habits and identify which technologies truly add value to their lives.
The second step involves reintroducing digital tools selectively, based on the assessment made during the break. By intentionally choosing which technologies to reintegrate, individuals can ensure that their digital usage aligns with their values and goals.
Lastly, the third step encourages individuals to establish practices and rules to maintain a healthy digital lifestyle, such as setting boundaries on screen time and utilizing digital tools purposefully rather than mindlessly. This three-step process provides a framework for individuals to reset their digital habits and find a balance that enhances their well-being and productivity. By defining these practices and adhering to them consistently, individuals can avoid falling back into unproductive or unhealthy digital habits. The goal is to create a sustainable and balanced approach to technology use that enhances productivity, mental well-being, and overall quality of life.
