Go back a few decades and very little of your career was up to you. Your boss decided what training you would receive, what promotions you would get, and your end-of-the-year raise.
You had to impress your boss who was the gatekeeper to your future.
That has all changed. 90% of your career success and development is completely up to you! You have full responsibility and you receive the full benefit. If you want or need training you can go find it and take a course from the comfort of your couch or the lunchroom at your office. Oftentimes you can find it for free.
All you have to do is come up with a plan and then take the steps to make it happen. If your career is not headed in the right direction then I will be the first to point my finger at you and congratulate you on the consequences of your actions and decisions. It is up to you to create your career. That is a very scary and exciting concept, but the best part of that is you are in control. Not someone else.
Thanks, Derek S. for reminding me that I need to remind others.
